New Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has been backed to sign Socceroos goalkeeper Maty Ryan, as he looks to hit the ground running in Glasgow.
The Australian was confirmed as the new Hoops manager this week, with recent reports claiming Ryan is already being considered as one of Postecoglou’s first signings.
Ryan is in search of a new club after being dropped by Brighton manager Graham Potter last season and forced to join Arsenal on loan.
Despite impressing across his three appearances for the Gunners, Mikel Arteta has yet to sanction a move to sign the Aussie permanently, with the club officially farewelling him last week.
Postecoglou made Ryan his first-choice keeper while in charge of the Socceroos and Mark Bosnich believes a reunion at club level in Scotland makes plenty of sense.
“Ange likes his goalkeepers to be sweeper keepers with the way he plays and that’s what Maty Ryan is. He knows him very well,” Bosnich said via the Daily Record.
“He likes his centre-backs to be able to bring the ball out and take risks. His possession game is intense based and needs players in key positions who can take those risks regardless of pressure.
“I’m sure the club will have targets but the more players you bring I the more time it takes to bed everyone down and he won’t have the time he’s had in the past.
“I’m not sure he’ll go into the Australian and J-League market, because it will take players time to adapt to the Scottish Premiership.
“I could be wrong and he might do that, but the fact he’s been given a 12-month rolling contract suggests he won’t have that time.”
Ryan isn’t the only Socceroo that Postecoglou could look to sign over the coming weeks with Aaron Mooy and Jamie Maclaren among other Aussie stars, who may make ideal additions at Celtic.
The Hoops failed to win a trophy across the 2020-21 campaign with their fans set to demand instant results from their new manager.
Postecoglou is expected to land in Glasgow imminently with the club to begin pre-season in Wales early next month.
