Victoria has begun accelerating its vaccine rollout, opening a new mass vaccination hub as more Victorians are eligible to receive the jab from yesterday.
Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence confirmed Olympic Park in About 400,000 Victorians under the age of 50, who fall into select priority groups, are now eligible to get the Pfizer jab.lion to continue works to transform the park into a multi-faceted sport and recreation precinct.
The priority groups include carers of people aged over 70 or who have specific medical conditions; disability workers and carers; adults with specific health or mental health conditions; and high-risk workers such as emergency/defence personnel and meat processing workers.
The expansion of the rollout is due to more vaccine supply becoming available from the Commonwealth.
Public transport workers and rideshare/taxi drivers under the age of 50 will be eligible from May 24 to get the Pfizer jab.
“If you’re an eligible worker under 50, place a call and make a booking to receive the Pfizer vaccine,” Health Minister Martin Foley said last week.
“Hundreds of thousands of critical workers, transport workers and others now have a clear pathway to access the vaccine recommended for their age – protecting them, their family, and the people they work with.”
People who are under 50 and eligible to receive the Pfizer jab must first call the coronavirus hotline on 1800 675 398 to make an appointment.
Walk-ins are not available to control Pfizer supply and minimise waste.
It comes as a new mass vaccination hub opened at Melbourne Showgrounds today, with an aim to vaccinate 2200 people at the site a day.
Victorians aged over 50 are also able to start receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine at GP clinics from yesterday.
As of today, a total of 313,000 vaccine doses have been administered in the state.
