Deputy prefect of Thesprotia on trial over the Greek flag in Souli

10 April, 2025

It may sound unbelievable, but it’s a case that could only happen in Greece — The Deputy prefect of Thesprotia on trial over the Greek flag in Souli, and, it’s certainly one of the more bizarre unpatriotic stories to come to light. The Deputy Prefect of Thesprotia, Thomas Ptoulis, is facing trial for placing a Greek flag in Souli.

In October 2023, on the initiative of the Regional Unit of Thesprotia, a 12-metre mast and a large Greek flag were installed in front of the historic Parliament building of the Souliotes.

At the time, Mr Ptoulis stated that the flag was a tribute to the Souliotes’ struggle and sacrifice for freedom — never imagining that he would end up being prosecuted for it.

According to epiruspost.gr, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thesprotia filed a lawsuit against him, arguing that the mast had been installed without the department’s permission and demanding its removal.

In response, Mr Ptoulis declared:

“When the Greek flag is taken down from the Acropolis, then it will come down from Souli.”

The trial is scheduled for 11 April, with the courtroom now the unlikely battleground over a national symbol.
