Emergency security measures at Souda Bay base following Iranian threats against U.S. installations

Emergency security protocols have been activated at the strategically significant Souda Bay military base in Crete following a formal statement by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which declared that all American bases, assets, and interests in the region constitute “legitimate targets” in response to the recent U.S.–Israeli military strikes against Iran.

According to Greek authorities, access to and from the base has been suspended for all personnel except those officially authorized. The heightened alert reflects growing regional instability and concerns over potential retaliatory actions by Iran or affiliated groups.

IRGC threat declaration

In a strongly worded statement, the IRGC said that, in response to what it described as “shameless aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against Islamic Iran,” all American bases and interests throughout the region would be considered lawful military targets.

The statement further asserted that Iranian missile strikes had already delivered “crushing blows” and that operations would continue “relentlessly until the enemy is definitively defeated.”

While no specific threat was directed explicitly at Greece, Souda Bay hosts critical U.S. military infrastructure, making it a facility of strategic relevance in the broader confrontation.

Strategic importance of Souda Bay

Souda Bay is one of the most important U.S. and NATO military hubs in the Eastern Mediterranean. The installation includes two principal facilities:

  • The air base at Mouzouras, northeast of Chania airport.
  • The naval base at Marathi, which supports allied warships.

The base accommodates American air and naval forces, personnel, logistics infrastructure, ammunition storage, and operational command capabilities. Its geographic position allows U.S. forces to project power and monitor developments across the Middle East, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Black Sea, and the Red Sea.

In recent days, the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford—the largest in the world—had docked at the Naval Support Activity Souda Bay for resupply before departing last Thursday.

Greek government response

An emergency meeting of Greece’s Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) is currently underway under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to assess developments.

Earlier, the Prime Minister held telephone conversations with:

  • The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani
  • The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan

The discussions focused on the evolving security environment in Iran and the broader Middle East, as well as regional stability concerns.

Greek officials have not publicly commented on the duration of the heightened security posture at Souda Bay. However, diplomatic sources indicate that Athens is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with allied partners.

Broader context

Iran’s declaration follows escalating exchanges between Tehran and Washington after coordinated U.S.–Israeli strikes targeted Iranian military infrastructure. In response, Iranian officials have broadened their rhetoric to encompass all American military presences in the region.

Security analysts note that while Souda Bay operates under longstanding bilateral agreements between Greece and the United States, its operational role in supporting U.S. naval and air missions inevitably places it within the strategic calculus of regional actors during periods of conflict escalation.

As tensions remain elevated across the Middle East, Greece now faces the delicate task of safeguarding national security while managing its alliance commitments amid rapidly shifting geopolitical conditions.
