The Greek national women’s basketball team suffered its first defeat of the EuroBasket 2025 tournament, falling 92–56 to France at SEF (Peace and Friendship Stadium) in the second round of group play. In contrast, the French remain unbeaten and have already secured a place in the quarter-finals.
The game set a new attendance record for the Greek women’s national team, with 8,860 fans at SEF — surpassing the 8,100 who attended the USA–Greece match in 2004. Despite the electric atmosphere, the Greek team, coached by Petros Prekas, ran out of steam in the third quarter against the powerhouse of Group A, France.
Greece remained competitive in the first half and even led by three points (21–24) after a three-pointer by Robin Parks. However, the team struggled to contain France’s accuracy from beyond the arc. In the third quarter, France extended a 7-point lead to 16 in just a few minutes, and from there, Greece couldn’t keep pace with the superior French side — silver medallists at the Paris Olympics and podium finishers in the last eight Women’s EuroBaskets (since 2013).
France’s standout performer was Janelle Salaun, who finished with 17 points and 5/6 from three-point range. Toure added 15 points, Rupert scored 14, and Astier chipped in with 12.
For Greece, Artemis Spanou led the way with 14 points, Mariella Fasoula added 11, and Elena Bosgana scored 10.
