Gunfire at White House Correspondents’ dinner sparks evacuation of President Trump amid security breach investigation

A high-profile White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington descended into chaos on Sunday evening after an armed man opened fire near a security screening area inside the venue, triggering a full emergency evacuation of US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and senior administration officials.

According to the FBI, the suspect has been identified as a 31-year-old schoolteacher from Torrance, California. He is currently in custody following what authorities are treating as a targeted security breach at one of the most heavily protected political events in the United States.

Witnesses described a sudden eruption of panic shortly after President Trump arrived at the annual media dinner. Within minutes of taking his seat, loud gunfire was heard from a lower-level area near the entrance to the ballroom, causing immediate confusion and mass panic among attendees.

Guests, including journalists and government officials, reportedly dove under tables as Secret Service agents rushed to form protective barriers around senior figures. Several attendees screamed “Get down!” as security personnel evacuated the President through a secure exit.

Investigators believe the suspect accessed a lightly monitored service corridor near the terrace-level entrance, where he allegedly assembled a “long firearm” concealed inside a bag. He then moved toward the main hall before opening fire, discharging between seven and eight rounds.

A Secret Service agent was injured during the rapid response, though officials confirmed the officer is in stable condition and recovering after receiving medical treatment. FBI counterterrorism units have joined the investigation to determine motive, planning, and possible external influences.

President Trump later addressed the media, confirming that an armed individual had “charged a security checkpoint with multiple weapons” before being “taken down” by Secret Service personnel. He praised the response, calling the agents “very brave” and stating they acted “extremely quickly.”

Trump also described the suspect as a “lone wolf” and a “whack job,” adding that he believed political violence is increasingly directed at high-profile public figures. “The people who do the most are the ones they go after,” he said, suggesting that his administration’s policies may have contributed to heightened tensions.

Security footage from inside the venue is being reviewed, including material reportedly posted by Trump on social media shortly after the incident, showing the aftermath of the arrest.

Authorities have confirmed that no official motive has yet been established. However, investigators are examining whether the suspect had prior online activity or ideological motivations linked to political extremism.

The incident has raised renewed concerns about security protocols at major political and media events in Washington, particularly those involving the President and foreign press.

Trump later stated that the event would be rescheduled within 30 days, insisting that the attack “will not stop” the administration from continuing public engagements.
