A retired police officer, Scott Hanley, has criticized the handling of the Daniel and Catherine Andrews car crash, calling it a significant deviation from standard procedures. Hanley, a former senior constable, said his patrol unit was redirected away from the scene on January 7, 2013, by a senior constable from a different station, despite his team being closer and en route with lights and sirens.
Hanley’s sworn statement supports concerns raised in a recent review by former Assistant Commissioner Raymond Shuey. The review found major issues with the police response and concluded that the Andrews’ SUV was speeding and on the wrong side of the road when it hit cyclist Ryan Meuleman. Shuey’s report suggested a cover-up to shield a political figure, prompting calls from the Meuleman family for the investigation to be reopened.
In response, Daniel and Catherine Andrews dismissed the review as a product of conspiracy theories aimed at securing financial gain through legal action. Meanwhile, lawyers for the Meuleman family are focusing on the involvement of Brett Curran, Mr. Andrews’ former chief of staff and current Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner. Curran has been subpoenaed for his phone records and drafts of press releases related to the crash.
