Unanimous condemnation of Iran’s attack by the EU – International reactions

2 October, 2024

On October 2, 2024, the international community has called for de-escalation following the launch of hundreds of missiles by Iran targeting Israel. During this tense period, both nations have resumed threats against each other, heightening the risk of a regional conflict that now seems increasingly probable.

The European Union has condemned Iran’s ballistic missile attacks on Israel in the strongest possible terms. According to Peter Stano, the spokesperson for the European Commission on foreign affairs, these assaults pose a serious threat to regional security. He emphasized the EU’s commitment to Israel’s safety and the stability of the entire Middle East.

Stano highlighted that waves of attacks and retaliations are fueling an uncontrollable cycle of conflict. He reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to reducing tensions and preventing a dangerous regional war. The EU is in close contact with all relevant parties and will continue to engage with various stakeholders in this context.

Borel: Immediate ceasefire needed

Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative, took to social media to express the union’s vehement condemnation of Iran’s attack on Israel. He warned that the dangerous cycle of assaults and reprisals is at risk of spiraling out of control, asserting that an immediate ceasefire across the region is crucial. Borrell reiterated the EU’s commitment to contributing to efforts aimed at preventing a regional war.

Michel: De-escalation in the Middle East is essential

Charles Michel, President of the European Council, also voiced his strong condemnation of Iran’s actions through social media. He stated that the attack threatens regional security and urged that the deadly spiral of escalation in the Middle East must cease immediately. Michel emphasized that a regional war would not benefit anyone and that the EU stands ready to support de-escalation efforts and protect civilian lives.

Condemnation from the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has also firmly condemned Iran’s actions. A spokesperson from Downing Street reiterated calls for de-escalation across the region, aligning with the broader international response to the situation.

Berlin: Iran driving the region to the brink

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, in her social media announcement, condemned the Iranian attack with the strongest terms possible, calling for an immediate halt to the assault. She warned that Iran is leading the region to the brink of disaster and that immediate action is necessary.

Guterres: This must stop

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the widening conflict in the Middle East, noting the new escalation following previous tensions. In a statement to Reuters, he expressed urgency, saying, “This must stop. We absolutely need a ceasefire.”

As world leaders respond with increasing alarm, it’s apparent that there is a collective urgency to address rising tensions in the Middle East and work towards restoring peace and stability in the region.
