Analysis of world population in 2023: India in first place and age trends

According to the latest UN estimates, the world population in 2023 will be 8.04 billion people. India is the country with the largest population with 1.43 billion, followed by China with 1.42 billion and the US with 339.5 million.

Together, these three countries will account for 39.7% of the world’s population in 2023.

Turkey, with 85.3 million inhabitants, ranks 18th among 194 countries in terms of population in 2023. According to TurkStat, Turkey accounts for 1.1% of the world’s population. The data, based on UN estimates, was published on the occasion of World Population Day on 11 July.

The countries with the largest child populations are Niger and the Central African Republic, where children make up 55.5% of the population. In Turkey, the figure is 26%, below the global figure of 29.8%.

In terms of the youth population (aged 15-24), Syria leads with 24.1 per cent, while Turkey has 15.1 per cent, slightly below the world average of 15.5 per cent.

According to UN data, Monaco has the oldest population, with the elderly accounting for 35.8% of the total. Monaco also has the highest life expectancy at birth: 89 years for women and 85.2 years for men, compared with the world average of 76 years for women and 70.8 years for men.

In terms of fertility, Niger has the highest rate, with 6.67 children per woman in 2023.

The country’s permanent population on 1 January 2023 is estimated at 10,413,982 persons (5,090,591 male and 5,323,391 female), a decrease of 0.5% compared to 10,461,627 persons on 1 January 2022.
