EURO 2024: Spain advances to final after thrilling 2-1 comeback against France

10 July, 2024

Spain is set to appear in a Euro final for the first time in 12 years after a thrilling comeback victory over France. In the first semi-final match of Euro 2024, held at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Spain triumphed 2-1 and secured their place in the grand final on Sunday, July 14th, at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.

Spain, under the management of Luis de la Fuente, demonstrated once again why they are considered the best team in the tournament. With this win, “La Roja” will compete in their fifth Euro final, aiming for their fourth trophy. The semi-final marked the end of the road for France, who had previously managed to survive a penalty shootout against Portugal. Despite an early lead, France was unable to maintain their advantage and succumbed to Spain’s relentless pressure.

Dramatic turnaround within five minutes

The semi-final saw its first significant chance very early. In the 5th minute, Yamal’s cross found Ruiz unmarked at the far post, but his header went wide. Just four minutes later, PSG midfielder Kolo Muani capitalized on a precise cross from Mbappé, heading the ball into the net to give France an early lead (1-0).

However, Spain turned the game around in a span of just five minutes. In the 21st minute, Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal scored a stunning goal, becoming the youngest player to score in a European Championship at 16 years and 323 days old. This goal also made him the youngest player to start in a Euro and World Cup semi-final, surpassing Pele’s record from the 1958 World Cup semi-final at 17 years and 244 days.

Four minutes later, Dani Olmo, after skillfully evading Tchouameni, scored with a powerful shot that deflected off Koundé, putting Spain ahead (2-1). With this goal, Spain, the most prolific team in the tournament with 13 goals, overcame France’s previously solid defense, which had only conceded one goal in five matches.

Second half: Tactical excellence from Spain

Spain showcased tactical brilliance in the second half, effectively closing down all avenues for France. The Spanish players consistently won the ball first and denied Mbappé any significant chances. France’s only notable opportunity came in the 75th minute when Hernandez shot wide from a good position.

France, despite their efforts, could not break through Spain’s defense. Didier Deschamps’ men lacked creativity and were predictable in their play. With Mbappé struggling to find form throughout the tournament, the outcome was inevitable. The French star had one last chance to equalize in the 86th minute, but his shot from inside the area was far from his usual standards.
