An important victory for Greek universities – and especially for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The Kapodistrian University of Athens topped the list in Southeastern Europe, the ranking of the “Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities” (ARWU), by the independent non-profit organization Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, which ranked it among the 400 best institutions worldwide.

The National University of Athens is also in the following positions in the ranking:

  • 1st place in Greece among the six Universities in the top 1000, and even scoring the highest grade in all the individual criteria in which Greek Universities received a grade.
  • In 1st place among the Universities of the Balkan Peninsula and Cyprus in all the criteria in which the Greek Universities received the highest scores in all of the Greek universities.

On the occasion of the new distinction, the Rector of the University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, stated the following:

“Another distinction for the first and largest University of Greece that fills us with pride and responsibility for the future. It is due exclusively to the academic staff of the Foundation, which despite the difficulties remains committed to producing high-quality and impactful research and scientific work. This work is recognized internationally and ranks our Institution among the most established and renowned universities worldwide. Congratulations therefore to all members of the academic staff of our University for this distinction. It is the commitment of the Foundation’s Leadership to intensify our efforts to continue to produce work that will lead us to conquer new heights.”

This ranking is considered one of the three most important in the world. It methodologically evaluates each university that it features:

  • graduates and faculty members who have been awarded the Nobel Prize or other major prizes
  • researchers whose articles have a high scientific impact and are systematically referred to
  • researchers with published work in the major journals Nature and Science

In addition, the table includes universities with a significant number of publications in the Science-Citation Index- Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI).
