Olympics 2024: Counterterrorism Chief reveals shocking plot failures – “Three failed attacks”

12 September, 2024

The head of France’s national counterterrorism agency, Olivier Christen, praised the security measures taken during the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, revealing that no attacks occurred, despite three failed attempts during the event.

Speaking on franceinfo radio on September 11, Christen emphasized the immense effort that went into safeguarding the Games. “Ensuring security was a challenge that we overcame thanks to months of extensive preparation,” he stated, highlighting the collaboration of various agencies and security forces.

Thanks to these efforts, no terrorist acts were carried out on French soil during the Games. However, Christen disclosed that there were “three failed attacks” during the event period. These included plots targeting establishments like bars around the “Geoffroy-Guichard” stadium in Saint-Étienne, another group planning attacks against Israeli institutions and representatives in Paris, and finally, two individuals from Gironde who had planned an attack during the Olympics.

All those involved in these attempted attacks were apprehended and are now imprisoned, underscoring the effectiveness of France’s counterterrorism operations during the global sporting event.
