Third runway at Melbourne airport to provide economic boost

17 September, 2024

The long-awaited approval of a third runway at Melbourne Airport is set to provide a significant economic boost, reduce flight delays, and increase competition. However, due to an extended approval process, the $3 billion project is now expected to be operational by 2031, a year later than initially planned.

Federal Transport Minister Catherine King gave the green light for the project under strict conditions to address local concerns about noise. To balance the impact on surrounding communities, Melbourne Airport will also expand its east-west runway, ensuring no single area is disproportionately affected by the airport’s growth.

The new 3,000-meter runway, running parallel to the existing north-south runway, will allow for simultaneous takeoffs and landings. This development is expected to significantly reduce delays and create opportunities for new airlines to enter the market.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus praised the decision, stating that the new runway will benefit Australian travelers and exporters alike. The project is projected to generate 51,000 jobs across Victoria’s tourism, agriculture, and education sectors, while adding $6 billion annually to the state’s economy.
