OAKLEIGH GLENDI 2024

6 November, 2024

Bigger, Bolder… Unstoppable!

Festivals held in open spaces in Melbourne often find themselves at the mercy of the weather. However, on the weekend of November 2 and 3, the Oakleigh Glendi at Warrawee Park enjoyed perfect conditions.

This year’s event was bigger and more dynamic than ever, attracting tens of thousands of people of all ages and nationalities who came to bask in its warm, festive atmosphere.

Rich in activities, the program organized by the Oakleigh Greek Community and Oakleigh Grammar kicked off on Saturday morning with a traditional ceremony led by an Indigenous elder, intended for “purification and the driving away of evil spirits.”

The myriad stalls, dance troupes, musical ensembles, abundant playgrounds for children, and numerous planned activities provided everything from entertainment and information to gastronomic delights and rich cultural experiences for the thousands who gathered to create beautiful memories. A significant highlight was the peaceful and harmonious coexistence of various nationalities, showcasing the brotherhood of peoples in practice at this grand Greek festivity.

Sunday morning brought further vibrancy to the Oakleigh Glendi, highlighted by a student parade from Oakleigh Grammar, led by the drumming corps, along with the raising of flags and the singing of the national anthems of Australia and Greece. Speeches were delivered by dignitaries, including church and community leaders, as well as representatives of local political authorities, commencing with His Grace Bishop Kyrikos of Melbourne and our Consul General, Mr. Emmanouil Kakavelakis. The speeches focused on the anniversary and importance of October 28, as well as the feast of the Holy Anargyroi, the patrons of the Oakleigh Community. A memorial service followed, along with a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument honoring those who have fallen.

The Oakleigh Glendi was broadcast live by 3XY Radio Greece, featuring hosts Angelis Kalodoukas, Lamprini Lamprou-Kristopher, Elena Kakosimou, Vula Imbrisi, George Koliantas and Evaggelos Vidiniotis from the central studio.

The 3XY hosts had the opportunity to invite and speak with representatives from various organizations and groups, including the active president of the Oakleigh Community, Mr. Christos Damatopoulos. With deep emotion regarding the success of the event, he detailed the objectives and goals of the Oakleigh Glendi, recalling the longstanding history of the community and recognizing the significant contributions of former president Mr. Angelos Sardellis, as well as discussing future aspirations. He also expressed gratitude to the audience, sponsors, the owners and staff of 3XY Radio Greece, and everyone who contributed to the event’s success, particularly thanking Greek artist Kostas Karafotis, who thrilled the crowd.

As noted by the beloved priest of the Holy Anargyroi, Father Stavros, the community operates on the principles of love and faith—love for our fellow man and commitment to our shared mission in our community, united as one and steadfast in our faith in Christ and our Saints.

Our community wishes to keep moving forward, united and healthy, and looks forward to next year.
