In celebration of its 75th anniversary, the “Greeks from Egypt and the Middle East – EEAMA” association is set to stage a side-splitting theatrical comedy, “Kitsos and his family”. Premiering on Saturday, March 1st at the South Oakleigh Theatre, this lively performance promises to offer a night of laughter, family drama, and witty satire.
EEAMA, established in 1952, continues to be a cornerstone of the Melbourne arts scene, bringing high-quality Greek-language productions to local audiences. This latest offering is no exception, combining humor, chaos, and a bit of Greek heritage in a play that tackles the universal theme of family legacy — but with a distinctly comedic twist.
The story centers around Kitsos Vardoulas, a hapless man burdened with massive debts, a financial ruin that he insists is due to his family’s “curse” rather than his own poor decisions. When a bailiff arrives to seize his possessions, Kitsos begins a frantic attempt to convince everyone that the Vardoulas family’s troubled past is to blame. The curse, which has haunted the family for generations, has finally caught up with him.
This theatrical gem, blending humor with intrigue, explores not only the farcical aspects of Kitsos’ situation but also delves into the deeper, sometimes absurd, aspects of Greek familial relationships. The play weaves together tales of scandal, misfortune, and hidden family secrets, all wrapped up in the ridiculousness of the Vardoulas family’s never-ending cycle of bad luck.
With elements of slapstick comedy and sharp dialogue, “Kitsos and his family” offers more than just laughs. The story touches on themes of fate, responsibility, and the complexity of generational bonds. Despite the outrageous circumstances, the play ultimately celebrates the resilience of its characters, showing that even in the face of adversity, the Greek spirit of perseverance and humor prevails.
This year’s production boasts a talented ensemble of 14 actors, blending experienced veterans with fresh, up-and-coming talent from Melbourne’s vibrant Greek community. Their performances promise to deliver an unforgettable experience, filled with moments that will have the audience in stitches. As the old Greek saying goes, “Even the colorful goat will laugh,” and this production aims to bring that saying to life.
The play will run from March 1st to March 23rd, with performances every weekend at 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. This is an opportunity not to be missed — a chance to enjoy a night of pure, unadulterated fun while celebrating the 75 years of cultural heritage that EEAMA represents.
