Greek National Day Parade 2025 in Melbourne moves to the Australian Hellenic Memorial

18 March, 2025

As March 25 approaches, Melbourne is preparing to host a series of stirring and festive events that will revive historic memories and strengthen a shared sense of identity. This year’s traditional Greek National Day parade makes its much-anticipated return after a five-year hiatus—taking place in the environs of the Shrine of Remembrance, specifically at the Australian Hellenic Memorial, on Sunday, March 23.

Originally constructed to honor the heroes of war, the Monument has evolved into a significant cultural hub in Melbourne. Over the years, it has hosted a multitude of national events that celebrate the deep historical bonds between Greece and Australia. The return of the Greek parade to this landmark is not only a tribute to the struggle for freedom and the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for their country, but also a vibrant reminder of the enduring contribution of the Greek-Australian community to the city’s cultural fabric.

Full Day of Commemorative Events

The meticulously planned program, organized by the Victorian Council for Greek National Day in collaboration with the Hellenic Museum of Melbourne, balances solemnity with celebration. The schedule for the events is as follows:

  • 2:30 p.m. – Parade Conclusion at the Monument
The parade will culminate at the Australian Hellenic Memorial, where a final homage will be paid to the heroes of the Greek War of Independence.
  • Post-Parade Celebration at the Hellenic Museum
Immediately following the procession, participants and supporters will gather at the Hellenic Museum (280 William Street, Melbourne) for a festive celebration. The event will feature live music, traditional dance performances, and exhibitions that highlight the richness of Greek cultural heritage—providing an ideal opportunity for socializing and cultural exchange.

Tuesday, March 25, 2025

  • 9:00 a.m. – Flag-Raising Ceremony at Federation Square
In a separate ceremony, the Greek flag will be hoisted at Federation Square. This ritual, accompanied by the national anthems of both Greece and Australia, is designed to reinforce national pride and underscore the continuous presence of the Greek-Australian community in Melbourne’s multicultural landscape.

A call for unity and celebration

These events transcend a mere celebration of national identity; they serve as a bridge between two cultures with deep historical and cultural roots. The return of the parade to the vicinity of the Shrine of Remembrance is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by previous generations and the unyielding commitment of today’s community to preserve and promote its cultural legacy.

Organizers extend a warm invitation to all Greek-Australians and friends of Hellenic culture to join in the festivities and celebrate this day of remembrance and national pride. As Melbourne prepares to mark this significant occasion, the upcoming events promise to enrich the city’s cultural landscape while honoring a shared history that continues to inspire unity and pride.
