Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to conclude his six-day visit to China today, wrapping up a trip marked by high-stakes discussions on trade, national security, and diplomatic relations.
His final stop in China takes him to the city of Chengdu, where he aims to highlight the growing commercial and economic links between the two nations, particularly in the medical technology sector.
Albanese is expected to visit a manufacturing and research facility owned by Cochlear, an Australian hearing implant company, and meet with key figures in China’s medical technology industry. The visit underscores the expanding economic ties between Australia and China, despite ongoing tensions over military activities and trade policies.
Earlier in the trip, Albanese raised concerns with Chinese President Xi Jinping about China’s live-fire military exercises near Australian waters. However, according to reports, Xi dismissed these concerns, stating that China regularly conducts military drills as part of its defense routine. The issue has sparked renewed discussions about the balance between trade relations and national security.
In a statement today, Albanese emphasized that while the relationship with China is complex, it also holds substantial opportunities. “We are committed to engaging with China in a constructive manner, seeking opportunities while being mindful of the challenges that arise,” he said.
While in Chengdu, Albanese will also visit a giant panda breeding center, with Chengdu being home to the iconic species. This visit follows China’s earlier move to send two giant pandas to the Adelaide Zoo, further strengthening people-to-people connections between the two countries.
The Prime Minister’s trip has been clouded by recent reports about how Australia would respond if tensions between the U.S. and China over Taiwan were to escalate. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles downplayed the significance of these leaks, calling the visit an important step in managing a “complex and challenging” relationship with China.
