Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a brief meeting after the dinner hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the United Nations headquarters. The dinner was attended by the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and the foreign ministers of Greece and the United Kingdom.
The meeting, which took place on early Thursday morning in New York, was part of the ongoing negotiations on the Cyprus issue. The discussions focused on topics such as Confidence-Building Measures that were previously discussed in Geneva in March.
President Christodoulides described the conversation with the Turkish Foreign Minister as “interesting.” Although no statements were made after the dinner, he emphasized that it would take time to assess how the discussions would evolve. Specifically, the relationship between the EU and Turkey was discussed, ahead of Cyprus’s presidency of the EU in 2026.
The dinner did not include any announcements, but the participants underscored the need for dialogue and further cooperation at all levels. The Cyprus president’s decision to continue discussions with international partners for the peaceful resolution of the Cyprus conflict remains a key priority for the island.
