36 wildfires erupt across Greece in 24 Hours — firefighters battle ongoing fronts

20 July, 2025

Greece has recorded a total of 36 rural and forest fires over the past 24 hours, according to the Hellenic Fire Service. Of these, 31 fires were swiftly brought under control in their initial stages thanks to rapid response efforts.

However, five wildfires remain active, with firefighting units continuing to battle the flames in multiple regions across the country. Ground and aerial firefighting forces have been deployed to contain the blazes, as extreme heat and dry conditions fuel fire risk.

The Fire Investigation Units, along with specialized teams from the Directorate for the Confrontation of Arson Crimes (DAEE), are conducting inquiries into the causes of the fires. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of arson in some cases.

The Fire Service is urging citizens to be extremely cautious, especially under current weather conditions. In case of fire, residents are advised to strictly follow the instructions of emergency services to ensure personal safety.

This comes amid a severe heatwave affecting much of Greece, with temperatures reaching up to 45°C in several areas and conditions expected to remain dangerous over the coming days.
