$500,000 Reward offered over fatal arson that killed innocent woman in Melbourne

21 July, 2025

Victoria Police have announced a $500,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for a fatal house fire that killed a completely innocent woman in Melbourne earlier this year.

A tragic mistake

On January 16, 2025, 27-year-old Katie Tangey was housesitting for her brother and his wife in the Melbourne suburb of Truganina while they were away on their honeymoon. Around 2 a.m., two individuals were caught on CCTV exiting a dark-coloured SUV – believed to be a BMW X3 or X5 – and parking outside the home on Dover Street.

Shortly after, a massive explosion occurred, and the suspects were seen fleeing the scene carrying what is believed to have been a jerry can. The fire tore through the three-storey townhouse. Despite calling emergency services, Tangey and the family’s golden retriever died at the scene.

Police believe the arson attack was linked to an ongoing illicit tobacco trade dispute but tragically targeted the wrong address. “Investigators know Katie was completely innocent and had no involvement in the tobacco trade,” a police spokesperson confirmed.

Search for suspects continues

In April, detectives released a digitally enhanced image of a suspect believed to be involved. The man is described as Middle Eastern in appearance, between 25 to 30 years old, and of slim build. The image was developed from CCTV footage.

Victoria Police have received several anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers, including one that provided a nickname. Detectives are urging that particular caller to come forward again with more information.

“We believe we know who directed this crime, and we’re getting closer to proving who carried it out,” said Detective Inspector Chris Murray from the Arson and Explosives Squad.

“Those responsible know they got the wrong house. Katie’s death was horrific, and she was entirely innocent. $500,000 is a significant sum – hopefully, someone with knowledge will step forward. Her family deserves justice.”

The reward, which will be granted at the discretion of the Chief Commissioner of Police, is intended to encourage witnesses to come forward. The Director of Public Prosecutions has also indicated the possibility of granting indemnity from prosecution to anyone who provides critical information about the principal offenders.
