“Intent on Creating Conflict”: Pepper Spray and Batons Used During Anti-Immigration Protests in Melbourne

31 August, 2025

Tensions escalated sharply during far-right anti-immigration protests earlier today, in central Melbourne. Police deployed pepper spray, batons, and made multiple arrests after protesters clashed with pro-immigration supporters and local residents, creating a volatile situation in the city’s streets.

Authorities estimate that approximately 300 participants took part in the demonstration, organized by far-right groups, raising significant public safety concerns. Smaller factions attempted to move into neighbourhoods with high migrant populations, prompting police to establish barricades and use controlled force to prevent further confrontations.

As a result of the clashes, two protesters and one officer were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. Additionally, at least seven individuals were arrested on charges related to public disorder and aggressive conduct.

The Minister for Public Safety stated that police are closely monitoring far-right organizations, warning that any unlawful or violent actions would face strict penalties. “We will not allow groups that provoke fear and division to threaten community cohesion,” he emphasized.

Migrant advocacy groups condemned the presence of far-right demonstrators, denouncing their actions as “provocative and dangerous,” and called on authorities to increase protection around schools, community centers, and areas with significant migrant populations. One spokesperson said, “Violence and targeting of migrants have no place in Melbourne.”

Today’s events serve as another stark reminder of the tensions caused by far-right mobilizations in the city. Local authorities are preparing for potential new protests in the coming weeks, as debates over immigration policy and the societal impact of far-right actions remain high on the public agenda. Police have reiterated that strict measures will be taken against any acts of violence or intimidation.
