German discount supermarket chain ALDI, well known for its low-cost strategy and streamlined shopping experience, is now venturing beyond groceries into the residential solar energy market in Australia. Starting Wednesday, households in New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, and Queensland will be able to purchase all-in-one solar panel and battery packages designed to slash power bills.
The package includes 15 Chinese-made solar panels paired with a 5.5kW hybrid inverter. Prices begin at $6,999 with a 10kWh battery system, while the larger 20kWh battery package costs $8,499. Installation will be carried out by partner company Tempo.
Simon Padovani-Ginies, ALDI Australia’s group director, said the move aligns with the supermarket’s core values of simplicity and transparency. “If you shop with ALDI, you know what you’re going to get – a straightforward, clean experience with no unnecessary complications. That’s exactly what we are bringing to the solar energy market,” he said.
Residential solar has been booming in Australia, with thousands of households producing their own energy and selling surplus back to the grid for credits. ALDI estimates that the average family could recoup its investment in just three to four years, making the offer attractive amid rising energy costs.
The company stressed that its solar venture will not be tied to grocery shopping. No “solar and groceries” bundles are planned. Instead, ALDI aims to present a stand-alone, competitive solution to simplify energy choices for consumers.
Sales launched this week in key metropolitan areas including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle, Wollongong, and Canberra, with the first installations expected to begin in November.
This bold move highlights ALDI’s strategy to leverage its market influence not only to deliver affordability in food retail but also to provide Australians with cleaner, cheaper, and simpler energy solutions for the future.
