In a landmark announcement, Greece’s Defence Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed that the country’s first Belharra-class frigate, named Kimon, will arrive in Phaleron Bay within the coming weeks.
The vessel marks a decisive step in modernising the Hellenic Navy with state-of-the-art warships that will significantly enhance Greece’s deterrent power.
Mr Dendias made the remarks during the inauguration of the newly renovated infirmary at the Hellenic Naval Academy, a project funded by a donation from the Vardinogiannis family and the Motor Oil Group. The ceremony was attended by senior officers of the Armed Forces as well as political and business figures.
In his address, the Minister highlighted the importance of the donation, stressing that support for military academies represents “an investment in the future of the Hellenic Navy.” He also noted the long-standing contribution of the Vardinogiannis family to the Armed Forces, dedicating the renovation to the memory of officer Nikos Vardinogiannis.
On defence procurement, Mr Dendias stated that alongside Kimon, Greece will receive three more Belharra frigates, while negotiations for the acquisition of two Italian Bergamini-class frigates are nearing completion. He emphasised that “these ships mean nothing without the human personnel to man them and serve their mission with self-sacrifice.”
The arrival of Kimon is considered a turning point for Greece’s naval power, coming at a time when geopolitical tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean demand heightened operational readiness and upgraded capabilities.
