Conservative activist Charlie Kirk killed in Utah University shooting amid confusion over suspect

11 September, 2025

Shock reverberates across the United States after conservative activist and ally of President Donald Trump, Charlie Kirk, was shot during an event at Utah Valley University and later died in hospital.

The incident occurred around 8 a.m. Australian time, during an event attended by students and political figures. Authorities initially reported that a “primary suspect” had been detained, but later clarified that the individual was released after questioning. The investigation into the shooter continues. Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed that officials believe one person is responsible for Kirk’s death, though no identity has been confirmed.

Early reports indicate Kirk was shot from a distance of approximately 190 meters and hit by a single bullet. His last words reportedly referred to “gang violence.” Video circulating on social media showed police removing an elderly man from the scene, though he is not linked to the shooting.

President Trump posted on Truth Social: “The great and legendary Charlie Kirk has died. Melania and I offer our condolences to his wife Erika and his family. Charlie, we love you!”

Born in 1993 in Illinois, Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012 to promote conservative ideas among college students and American youth. Under his leadership, the organization became one of the main pillars of the U.S. right-wing movement. Kirk also hosted The Charlie Kirk Show, authored books such as The MAGA Doctrine and Right-Wing Revolution, and launched initiatives like Professor Watchlist, drawing both admiration and controversy.

A staunch supporter of President Trump, Kirk frequently appeared at the White House and actively participated in election campaigns, particularly promoting the MAGA movement among young voters. His death raises concerns over political violence and security at public events in the United States.
