Chris Fagan’s bold sub move turns into AFL coaching masterstroke – Lachie Neale’s second-half brilliance seals glory
The Brisbane Lions have etched their name in AFL history with a commanding 122–75 victory over the Geelong Cats in the 2025 Grand Final at the MCG, claiming their second consecutive premiership in a game defined by tactical genius and team resilience.
Coach Chris Fagan revealed he spent a sleepless night agonising over one of the toughest calls of his career — naming superstar co-captain Lachie Neale as the tactical sub. That gamble paid off spectacularly.
With the scores locked at halftime, Fagan unleashed Neale, who sparked a second-half surge that blew Geelong off the park. Despite limited preparation following a calf injury, Neale recorded 17 disposals, 7 clearances, and a stunning goal that turned momentum Brisbane’s way.
“I thought I’d look like either a genius or an idiot. Thankfully, it worked,” Fagan admitted.
The victory caps off a gruelling season in which the Lions faced mounting injuries — including to Eric Hipwood and Jarrod Berry — and a humiliating loss to Geelong earlier in finals. Fagan feared fatigue had caught up with his squad, but they responded with their most complete football of the year.
Midfield sensation Will Ashcroft again claimed the Norm Smith Medal, becoming a two-time recipient after a dominant 32-disposal, 10-clearance performance.
Emotion filled the MCG as Oscar McInerney received his long-awaited premiership medal after missing 2024’s triumph, joined by Darcy Gardiner and tributes to injured stars Kiddy Coleman and Linc McCarthy. The team also honoured Jarrod Berry, who selflessly withdrew after admitting he wasn’t physically ready.
“We’re cockroaches – you can’t kill us,” joked Neale post-match. “This group has heart, brotherhood, and belief. That’s what makes us special.”
With back-to-back flags secured, the Brisbane Lions have solidified their place as the dominant team of the decade, their journey from adversity to glory a testament to unity, courage, and an unshakeable winning spirit.
