Greece marked the 65th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus with a dramatic display, sending two F-16 Viper fighter jets of the Hellenic Air Force to fly over Nicosia during the military parade.
The aircraft performed precise maneuvers above the parade area, highlighting the strong defense cooperation between Greece and Cyprus.
According to Greek Deputy Minister of National Defense, Thanasis Davakis, the F-16 flyover demonstrably reinforces the unified defense doctrine between the two nations and strengthens Greece’s strategic presence on the island. The move carries symbolic weight, underlining both countries’ commitment to regional security and stability.
The jets, armed and fully operationally autonomous, can conduct missions without in-flight refueling, enhancing their deterrence capability. The last participation of Greek fighter jets in Cyprus Independence Day celebrations occurred in 2017, when a pair of F-16 block52+ entered Nicosia FIR and flew over the parade.
In addition, the parade showcased the Hellenic National Guard’s new H145M attack helicopters, boosting Cyprus’s deterrent power. These multi-role, technologically advanced aircraft offer agility, survivability, and adaptability in complex environments, improving operational response speed and precision.
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that the effort to strengthen the National Guard’s deterrence will continue, noting that the presence of Greek jets sends a clear message: Greece and Cyprus maintain their joint commitment to security, freedom, and national reunification.
The event highlighted the strategic significance of bilateral cooperation, sending clear stability signals across the region, while new assets and upgraded deterrence reinforce Cyprus’s operational readiness in modern theaters of operations.
