ATO 2024/25 Tax Deadline: What Australians must do before October 31 to avoid penalties

3 October, 2025

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers that the deadline for filing 2024-2025 tax returns is Friday, October 31, 2025. Australians who miss the date could face penalties and fines, officials have warned.

When is the deadline?

If you’re lodging your tax return yourself, you must complete it by October 31.
If you’re using a registered tax agent, you’ll have until May 15, 2026, but you must contact the agent before October 31 to be added to their client list.

Why is filing mandatory?

Filing a tax return is a legal obligation. It ensures the ATO can determine whether you’ve underpaid or overpaid tax.
If you’ve overpaid, you’ll receive a refund. If you’ve underpaid, you’ll get a bill.

The ATO is increasing its scrutiny on side hustles and digital income, requiring taxpayers to declare rentals, online sales, and even social media earnings.
Work-related expenses such as tools or uniforms may be tax-deductible, helping you reduce your taxable income.

How to lodge your return

For those with simple finances, returns can be filed online through myGov, linked to the ATO.
Select “Lodge my tax return”, input your income and deductions, and submit.

If you’re working with a tax agent, they’ll advise you on what documents are required.

When will I get my refund or bill?

Online submissions are processed within two weeks, while paper forms take up to 10 weeks.
If you owe tax, the payment deadline is Friday, November 21.

Can’t pay your bill?

If you’re struggling financially, payment plans are available for debts under $200,000, though interest may apply.

Missed the deadline?

The ATO may impose penalties for late lodgement, which increase over time. However, the agency often shows leniency for one-off cases.

“We recognise that sometimes people don’t meet their lodgement obligations on time, even with the best intentions,” the ATO said.
“Generally, we don’t apply penalties in isolated cases of late lodgement.”
