New Left and Plefsi Eleftherias say No to the acquisition of a fourth Belharra Frigate

3 October, 2025

They have submitted a request for a roll-call vote on the ratification of the agreement for the acquisition of a fourth Belharra frigate and the upgrade of the existing ones.

The parliamentary groups of New Left and Plefsi Eleftherias expressed their disagreement with the further strengthening of the Armed Forces and the Hellenic Navy, filing a formal request for a roll-call vote regarding the contract for the fourth Belharra and the modernization of the previous ships.

The parliamentary representative of New Left, Nasos Iliopoulos, explained the reasoning behind the request, stating among other things:

“We do not trust this government — not for one or 28 billion euros, which is the total amount of the armament programs, but not even for five euros. Because when, in a few years, the truth is revealed about the kind of party that may have been going on with these defense procurements, the ‘Tsochatzopoulos affair’ will look like peanuts.”

From Plefsi Eleftherias, Eleni Karageorgopoulou denounced the contract with the French manufacturer, claiming that it conceals additional costs for the Greek state.

According to the parliamentary schedule, the roll-call vote will take place on Friday morning at 10:00, local time (5pm Melbourne time today). The New Democracy, PASOK, SYRIZA, and Hellenic Solution parliamentary groups are expected to vote in favor of ratifying the agreement.
