Victorians are being urged to take precautions as powerful winds and the threat of thunderstorm asthma sweep across the state.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning, forecasting destructive gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour in southwestern regions, and up to 130 km/h along the coast west of Cape Otway.
The Department of Health has declared a moderate risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma in East Gippsland, Northern Country, and Mallee. Experts warn that a mix of high grass pollen levels and thunderstorms could trigger severe asthma attacks. Those with asthma or hay fever are advised to stay indoors, close windows, and turn off air conditioners that draw in outdoor air.
Emergency Management Commissioner Tim Wiebusch urged Victorians to charge phones and prepare for possible power outages, while the SES warned of hazards including falling trees, debris, and downed powerlines. Winds are expected to peak in Melbourne between 3pm and 5pm on Wednesday before easing overnight.
