President Sakellaropoulou’s tearful farewell to Dionysis Savvopoulos

26 October, 2025

“Savvopoulos was the voice of an entire Greece” — emotional scenes at the farewell of the legendary songwriter

With words filled with emotion, President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou paid tribute to Dionysis Savvopoulos, describing him as “the artist who gave sound to the dreams, anxieties, and revolts of generations of Greeks.”

Speaking at the funeral service, attended by a large crowd of citizens, politicians, and artists, Sakellaropoulou praised Savvopoulos as “the poet who gave rhythm to the soul of Greece.”

“Savvopoulos was never just a singer-songwriter,” she said. “He was a thinker who showed us that art can be political without being propaganda — and deeply personal while still belonging to everyone.”

She highlighted the timelessness of his work: “From To Fortigo to Vromiko Psomi, every song of his is a narrative of Greece — of its joy, pain, and resilience.”

Her voice broke as she concluded: “Today we say goodbye to a creator who taught us to love ourselves, our land, and our language a little more.”

Savvopoulos’s farewell became a spontaneous act of collective emotion, as the crowd softly sang his songs — a moving reminder that his music lives on in the soul of the nation.
