Melbourne Airport Rail Link: detailed planning underway for Tullamarine station

27 October, 2025

Detailed planning has officially commenced for the long-awaited Tullamarine station, a central component of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link, sparking renewed optimism that the project may finally be completed by the early 2030s.

The rail link, long promised by state and federal leaders, is expected to provide direct and seamless access to Melbourne Airport’s multiple terminals, significantly improving transport connections for passengers and the western suburbs.

Advanced discussions have focused on key design elements, including the optimal placement of lifts and escalators, the elevated structure’s overall architecture, and whether to include platform screen doors similar to those in Melbourne’s $15.5 billion Metro Tunnel. These considerations aim to ensure passenger safety, efficiency, and integration with existing and planned airport infrastructure, including new elevated roads and expanded terminal access zones.

While no construction timeline has been formally announced for the Tullamarine section, the Sunshine “superhub”—a major project to untangle and upgrade rail lines in Melbourne’s west—is already underway and expected to be completed by 2030. The superhub will accommodate more than 1,000 train services daily, unlocking capacity for the airport line and improving regional connectivity.

The Melbourne Airport Rail Link has a history of delays and political disputes. Initially scheduled for a 2029 opening, the project was mothballed in 2023 under former Premier Daniel Andrews due to disagreements over whether the Tullamarine station should be underground or elevated. Since then, the airport has progressed with related infrastructure, creating a clearer framework for the elevated station’s design.

Last year, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revived the project, pledging an additional $2 billion to complete the Sunshine segment and establishing a steering committee comprised of senior federal, state, and airport officials. The committee is actively coordinating design, scope, and timeline elements to ensure the project’s successful completion.

Airport and government representatives emphasise the rail link’s importance for Victoria, citing enhanced passenger choice, stronger connections to the western suburbs, and long-term capacity improvements across Melbourne’s transport network. With careful planning and coordination, the Tullamarine station is positioned to become a critical hub in Victoria’s expanding rail system.
