Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Kyiv and Athens are preparing a new bilateral agreement in the energy sector, ahead of his official visit to the Greek capital today, Sunday, 16 November.
In a message posted on social media, Zelensky said that Ukraine and Greece are finalising a deal aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s natural gas supply both for the coming winter and for the long-term future. “We are also preparing an agreement with Greece – in the field of energy,” he wrote, stressing that the goal is “to maximise the options for supplying Ukraine with natural gas, both this winter and strategically for the long term.”
The Ukrainian president emphasised that multiple agreements with European partners—from Norway to Greece—are crucial for ensuring steady and secure gas flows into Ukraine during a period of heightened vulnerability due to Russia’s ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure. “Agreements with various European countries, from Norway to Greece, will guarantee the supply of natural gas to our country. I thank all partners who support us,” Zelensky added.
Zelensky will arrive in Athens on Sunday afternoon, local time, for meetings with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantina Tassoula, and Speaker of Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis. The visit comes at a pivotal moment for Greece’s own energy ambitions, particularly its bid to become a regional entry point for American LNG through the Alexandroupolis FSRU and the Revithoussa terminal.
A key component of Kyiv’s interest is the so-called “vertical natural gas corridor,” an emerging energy route stretching from Alexandroupolis through Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova before reaching Ukraine. The corridor is considered vital for Ukraine as it seeks to secure stable supplies amid depleted reserves and damaged infrastructure resulting from Russian strikes.
This will be Zelensky’s second official visit to Athens. His first took place in August 2023, while Prime Minister Mitsotakis visited Odesa in 2024 and again in June 2025 for the 4th Ukraine–South East Europe Summit.
Following his stop in Athens, Zelensky is scheduled to travel to Paris on Monday and to Madrid on Tuesday as part of a broader European diplomatic tour.
