ST NICHOLAS GREEK ORTHODOX LANGUAGE SCHOOL – SAT 17 NOVEMBER 2018
Locals from Yarraville’s St Nicholas Greek School will host their first ever zorbathon* to tie in with the inaugural school open day on Saturday 17 November 2018.
The event will showcase the best of Greek culture, traditional food including Greek donuts called loukoumades and delicious spanakopita, together with zorba dancing. There will also be a sausage sizzle.
Spokesperson for the school, Father Alexandros says the open day is an important annual event, as it showcases the rich cultural history associated with the school, and it’s an opportunity for everyone to learn about what the school has to offer.
“We welcome everyone in the inner west to come and celebrate at our open day. We encourage people get involved in the fun and excitement associated with the event, especially those who are thinking of sending their children to the school,” said Father Alexandros.
“Since opening in the late 1950s, St Nicholas Greek School has been a central meeting point for many migrant families spanning over three generations,” he said.
“Dancing is central to everything Greeks do and we are hoping to find Melbourne’s best zorba dancer, with the last person standing being crowned the ultimate winner,” said Father Alexandros.
St Nicholas Greek School was one of the very first Greek schools in Melbourne and continues to play a central role where many Greek Australians gather to embrace their cultural identity. Many religious celebrations are held at the church including Christmas, Easter, baptisms, weddings and other cultural celebrations.
The school currently has 140 students enrolled from prep all the way to VCE. The school has been formally recognised by the Victorian department of education for the past 21 years with all learning programs fully accredited, reflecting the Victorian Curriculum for Greek language.
