Man charged after ‘Mother of Satan’ found in Adelaide home

1 May, 2019

A court has heard a highly volatile substance known as “Mother of Satan” was found at a home in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, where a man was arrested for allegedly manufacturing explosives.

Officers made the discovery after attending the home on Heytesbury Road at Davoren Park around 8.30pm yesterday.

Aaron Ellis, 43, has been charged with possessing an explosives and taking steps to manufacture an explosive device.

Pictures released by the court show what appears to be materials for pipe bombs and mixed chemicals being stored in a fridge.

Prosecutors told the court police attended the accused man’s home in February after he allegedly made a racist comment online.

On that occasion nothing was found and no charges were laid.

Fresh information received yesterday led officers to raid the property again last night where they allegedly discovered the “highly volatile” chemicals.

The court heard the substances could have caused substantial damage and injury if not found, with the explosive known to have blown off someone’s hands interstate.

Prosecutors say the accused man has provided no explanation for why the chemicals were at the property.
Officers from the bomb squad remain at the house today, with the chemicals deemed too dangerous to move.

It’s expected that they will be detonated in the backyard of the home, with nearby residents evacuated from their properties.

Ellis applied for home-detention bail, with his lawyer arguing he didn’t pose a significant risk to the community.

His lawyer said Ellis claims the items were at the property during the original search but not but not found.

But the magistrate said without an explanation as to the reason behind the items, he wouldn’t grant any form of bail.

Ellis will return to court next month.
