A paradise on Greece’s earth for non-smokers. The first smoke-free beach is here on the island of Serifos in the Cyclades. The pilot program starts this summer in cooperation of local authorities and the Laskaridis Foundation. This has been announced on Wednesday on the occasion of the Work Anti-Smoking day on May 31st.
The first smoke-free beach on the Cyclades and the whole Greece is the beach of Vagia by Megalo Livadi on the south-west of Serifos.
Vagia is a beach with wild beauty, thick sand, multi color pebbles and crystal clear waters. Vagia is a beach protected by the EU’s Natura 2000 network.
The action takes place under the environmental program Sea Change Greek Islands and is in the form of a “behavioral experiment” aiming to eliminate smoking at the beaches alongside the prevention of marine pollution.
Cleaning of the Serifos beaches in the last two years revealed that cigarettes are the most common waste.
Within the pilot program a “controlled smoking area” will be established, while installed ashtrays will carry environmental messages.
Local craftsmen will work for the construction of the “controlled smoking zone”.
The project will also create one work place that will be funded by the Laskaridis Foundation.
