USA World Cup stats confirm dominance

10 July, 2019

A look at world No.1 and four-time world champions USA’s stranglehold on women’s football.

America’s win over the Netherlands in Lyon last Monday was their fourth World Cup triumph in just seven tournaments.

They claimed the inaugural tournament in 1991, won on home soil in 1999, triumphed in 2015 across the border in Canada and now have a first title on European soil.
They became the second nation, after Germany (2003 and 2007), to successfully defend the World Cup.

The USA haven’t lost a match on home soil since a 1-0 loss to the Matildas two years ago; and just one friendly since then at all, a friendly loss to France in Le Havre last year.

Other statistics show their dominance of the women’s game.

  • They have reached the last four at every World Cup.
  • Only once have they failed to reach the finals of the Olympics.
  • They have won nine of 10 continental championships, and have claimed the last two CONCACAF titles without conceding a goal.
