Cloudy skies and low temperatures did not deter members and friends of Merimna Pontion Kyrion of Oceania attend the annul Christmas party, which this year was held at the Sofitel Melbourne.
On arrival, guests enjoyed a glass of bubbly, followed by an array of delicacies provided at Sofi’s High Tea.
As with all of Merimna’s events, fund raised go to a particular charity, project or cause. All proceeds from this function will be directed to a needy family to assist them during this festive season. The amount raised by the generous support of the ladies present amounted to a total of $2,200-.
Merimna’s president, Litsa Athana-siadis thanked everyone present and spoke about the major achievement of the unveiling of the George Devine Treloar Memorial Statue in Ballarat.
Mrs Athanasiadis added “I would like to thank Merimna for its continued support for the fundraising effort to erect the statue in Ballarat. The journey started four years ago with many people contributing their time and energy to make it a realty. There were a lot of hurdles along the way but the persistence and vigour of a handful of people made it all possible Mrs. Athanasiadis said.
Mrs Athanasiadis then continued, I would like to especially thank Penny Tsombanopoulos who has been my right hand person during the entire process, Christina Despoteris a member of the GDT Memorial Committee for her dedication and zeal when dealing with the City of Ballarat, Efthimia Kranitis whose exceptional artistic talent has designed all of the printed material for the project, as well as Madeleine Athanasiadis who has been by my side, encouraging me and giving me strength to continue.
Mrs Athanasiadis also made special mention of Tasa Kasapoglou Damante “a mum with 4 children” who is always by Merimna’s side, as well as a dedicated member and dancer of Pontiaki Estia. She was awarded with “Merimna’s Annual Award” , a tradition jewellery piece which will complement her national costume.
It was inspiring to see so many young members of Merimna present with their friends, they too work hard for the success of all Merimna’s events and we thank them dearly. Of course, they are our future and we look forward to watching them carry on our legacy, Mrs. Athanasiadis continued.
Thank you all once and again and a very Mery Christmas.
