Absentee voting: an expression of democracy of great interest in Greece and abroad

23 April, 2024

Postal voting is a way of exercising the right to vote that is attracting the interest of citizens both inside and outside the borders of Greece. With more than 114,200 registered voters so far, the prospect of voting by post has aroused considerable interest.

The number of voters outside Greece has exceeded expectations and is significantly higher than in last year’s parliamentary elections. This participation is expected to increase as we approach the end of the registration period.

Of particular interest is the participation of voters in Greece, more than 80,900 of whom have already registered to vote by post. This shows the interest and the need for solutions to facilitate citizens’ participation in the electoral process.

An indication of the different approach is the increase in the number of voters registered outside Greece, which has almost doubled compared to the previous elections. This demonstrates the importance that Greek citizens attach to the electoral process and their desire to participate actively in the democratic process, even if it means dealing with bureaucratic procedures.

Moreover, the geographical distribution of the applications from abroad shows a wide range of participation, with the majority of applications coming from Europe, demonstrating the dispersion of the Greek population in different countries of the world map and their desire to keep their ties with their homeland alive.

In this context, it is also encouraging that there is a mixed age participation, with every age group represented in the percentage of registered voters, demonstrating that the possibility of postal voting is accessible and attractive to all age groups, regardless of location and personal circumstances. In particular, citizens aged 41-50 and 51-60 currently represent 39.6% of the registered population. Younger people aged 17-30 and 31-40 account for 30.8%, while older people aged 61-70 and over 71 account for 29.6%.
