AEK stuns Fiorentina, boosting Conference League hopes with a stunning 1–0 away victory in Florence — their biggest win of the season so far — to strengthen their chances of progressing to the UEFA Conference League knockout stages.
Golden night in Florence
AEK shone under the lights at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. The only goal came in the 35th minute when Mijat Gaćinović finished a clever move from the left. His calm touch sent the ball past the keeper and into the net.
After that, AEK stayed firm. The defence stood tall, and Cican Stanković made several key saves. Fiorentina struggled to create clear chances, while the visitors looked well organised and confident.
Teamwork and discipline
Coach Matías Almeyda praised his players for their effort. “We showed courage and unity,” he said. “This is what AEK stands for.”
Steven Zuber and Orbelín Pineda led the midfield with quick passes and smart pressing. The team worked as one, keeping their shape and control. Fiorentina, last year’s Conference League finalists, could not match AEK’s energy.
The result gives AEK seven points and a strong chance to qualify for the next round.
Good week for Greek football
It was also a good week for other Greek clubs. Panathinaikos beat Sturm Graz 2–1 in the Europa League, with goals from Karol Świderski and Davide Calabria.
In Thessaloniki, PAOK drew 1–1 with Brann after a late equaliser. Omonia Nicosia won 2–0 at home against Dynamo Kyiv, earning their first win of the campaign.
Looking ahead
AEK now return to Super League action before their next European match. With confidence growing and belief restored, Almeyda’s men look ready to fight for qualification — and to keep Greek football’s momentum alive in Europe.
