Airports brace for busiest day of the year as Easter travel kicks off

28 March, 2024

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to jam airport queues and crowd roads today ahead of the long Easter weekend.

More than 200,000 people are expected to pass through Sydney and Melbourne airports in the next 24 hours – the busiest day of the weekend. Another 50,000 will pass through Brisbane Airport.

People are being advised to allow plenty of time for check-in and, if possible, to check in online before arriving at the airport. In major cities, traffic began to build up on the roads leading to the airports before 6am.

People planning to travel out of the city should also be aware of traffic hotspots. In NSW, the Pacific Highway north through Wahroonga, Sydney and Newcastle is expected to be busy, as is the Great Western Highway through Blackheath. The Princes Highway south of Nowra is also likely to be busy.

In Melbourne, the Monash Freeway and West Gate Bridge will be the main bottlenecks. Brisbane travellers are likely to experience delays on the Bruce Highway and southbound M1. In Adelaide, the Sturt Highway is expected to be the busiest and in Perth, the Kwinana Freeway is expected to be slowest.

Travellers in NSW are also being warned that double fines are now in place, while police are expected to be out in force in all states and territories.
