Ange Postecoglou has revealed he was aware Tottenham planned to sack him even before their Europa League triumph in Bilbao. Despite the abrupt end, the Australian says the affection he still receives from Spurs fans shows his tenure was a success.
The 60-year-old was speaking after being unveiled as Nottingham Forest’s new head coach on a contract running until 2027. Reflecting on his Spurs exit, Postecoglou admitted:
“The ending wasn’t great … I knew it was coming so it wasn’t a surprise. We won it, we had the parade, it was a great three days and I didn’t want anything to tarnish that. After that I kind of knew it was done.”
Postecoglou, who spent two years at Tottenham, said he took pride in the bond he built with supporters, even during difficult moments.
“We put them through some tough times but there isn’t a Spurs supporter I meet now who doesn’t want to hug me and take me home for dinner, so I must have done something right. Ultimately, that’s what we do it for. Spurs will always hold a special place in my heart.”
A new chapter at Nottingham Forest
Postecoglou’s immediate focus is on winning over Forest fans, who remain fond of his predecessor, Nuno Espírito Santo. Nuno guided the club to a seventh-place Premier League finish last season and secured European football for the first time since 1995-96.
“They’re not going to love me from the first day – it’s something I have to earn. I have to gain their trust and respect. This is one of those unique football clubs where, if you get momentum, great things can happen.”
The Australian also praised owner Evangelos Marinakis for sharing his ambition, particularly with the club eyeing Europa League success this season.
“I love creating things that last. Everywhere I’ve been, I’d like to think I’ve left a mark, and that’s what I want to do here. Fans will know that if I set my mind on something, I’ll see it through. Hopefully I can bring some special times to this club.”
The ‘second-year’ promise
Postecoglou was reminded of his bold declaration at Spurs last year, when he told fans after a loss to Arsenal that he “always wins things in the second year” – a claim he backed up by delivering the club’s first trophy in 17 years.
“I’ve won a couple in my first season too; at Celtic I won a double right away,” he said with a smile. Asked if he could do the same at Forest, Postecoglou replied: “Of course I can. I may have to, just to make sure I get a second year here, mate.”
