Australia must stamp out Islamophobia, PM Albanese says

12 September, 2025

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivered a strong call for unity and social cohesion on Friday, declaring that the country “must stamp out the hate, fear, and prejudice that drive Islamophobia.”

His comments came during a joint press conference with Aftab Malik, the special envoy appointed last year to address Islamophobia, as the government released a long-awaited report on the issue.

Islamophobic incidents have risen sharply across Australia since Hamas’ October 2023 attacks on Israel, prompting the government to take action to safeguard Muslim communities. Albanese stressed that “Australians should be able to feel safe at home in any community,” adding that targeting people because of their religion is “an attack on our core values.”

The government has pledged to carefully consider the report’s recommendations before making further decisions. Albanese’s remarks highlight the importance of social harmony and solidarity in addressing challenges faced by multicultural societies.
