Australia today marks a national day of mourning to honour the victims of the December 14 Bondi Beach terror attack, which claimed the lives of 15 innocent people and deeply shocked the nation.
As part of the official commemoration, the Australian national flag is flying at half-mast at all federal government buildings and across New South Wales. Other institutions and organisations displaying the flag have been invited to participate in accordance with national protocol.
The theme of the day, “Light will win, a gathering of unity and remembrance,” was chosen by the Chabad Community in Bondi, whose Hanukkah event was targeted in the attack. The theme underscores resilience, solidarity and collective remembrance in the face of hatred and violence.
National institutions in Canberra and across New South Wales will be illuminated this evening as a symbolic act of unity. A commemorative installation titled “15 Pillars of Light” will also be displayed in Canberra and at locations around the country, representing each of the lives lost.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the illuminated pillars would serve as a powerful national symbol of mourning, remembrance and unity. Australians are encouraged to observe a minute’s silence at 7:01pm, and to place a lit candle in their window or at their doorstep in solidarity with the Jewish community.
Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek also urged Australians to perform a “mitzvah” — an act of kindness or goodwill — ranging from checking on neighbours to volunteering, supporting local businesses or donating to those in need.
An invitation-only memorial service, organised by Chabad of Bondi, will be live-streamed from 7pm AEDT, while members of the Jewish community will gather at the Sydney Opera House, which will be illuminated in white as a gesture of solidarity and mourning.
Community leaders said the day was not only about remembrance, but also about reclaiming public spaces through unity and peace, reinforcing Australia’s commitment to social cohesion and mutual respect.
