Australian travellers remain safe following deadly attacks in Doha – experts reassure

10 September, 2025

Following recent deadly air strikes in Doha, Qatar, Australian travellers have not experienced flight cancellations or major disruptions. Hamad International Airport continues to operate normally, serving flights to and from Australia. Airlines are avoiding airspace over Iraq, Iran, and Israel, while major carriers including Emirates, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, and Air France maintain constant monitoring of the situation.

Virgin Australia’s new flights to Doha, launched in partnership with Qatar Airways in June, remain unaffected. Qatar Airways, the only airline offering direct flights from Australia, confirmed that operations continue normally and emphasized that passenger safety remains its highest priority.

Aviation expert Justin Wastnage, adjunct fellow at Griffith University’s Institute of Tourism, explained that the Israeli strikes were highly targeted, focusing on senior Hamas leadership reportedly meeting to discuss the latest Gaza ceasefire proposal. “There is no direct threat to commercial flights,” he stated, noting that some nearby resorts and emerging tourist destinations could be indirectly affected. While some travellers may feel nervous, airlines are taking extra precautions and adjusting flight paths to avoid any potential risks.

Dean Long, CEO of the Australian Travel Industry Association, reassured Australians that flights continue as scheduled and there is no need to cancel travel plans. “The situation is fully under control. Qatar Airways and Virgin Australia flights are operating normally, and any disruption will be managed with full support from airlines and travel agents,” he said.

The Federal Government’s Smart Traveller advisory recommends Australians exercise standard safety precautions and stay updated on regional developments. Experts emphasize that, despite regional tensions, air travel remains safe, allowing travellers to continue their plans with confidence.
