A car meet spiraled into chaos last night as hundreds of car hoons overran Melbourne’s iconic Chapel Street, blocking traffic and performing dangerous stunts.
Victoria Police responded to the disturbance around 7pm after receiving reports of reckless driving, burnouts, and a large crowd causing traffic gridlock in the South Yarra area.
Footage from the scene shows vehicles performing burnouts in the middle of the road, prompting police to temporarily shut down a section of the busy shopping and dining precinct.
At one point, a tow truck attempting to pass through was swarmed by individuals trying to climb onto the vehicle, adding to the disorder.
Police believe the gathering started earlier in the evening in Port Melbourne, where over 600 people had reportedly assembled before moving en masse to Chapel Street.
Authorities said they were aware of an organized attempt to engage in “intentional high-risk driving activity.”
“Officers issued infringement notices to several drivers who chose to engage in hooning activity,” a police spokesperson said.
“A number of defect notices were also issued in relation to modified vehicles.”
To control the situation and ease traffic, road closures were briefly implemented.
Despite the size and intensity of the crowd, no arrests were made, but investigations are continuing.
Police are urging members of the public with footage or information to come forward.
