Cyprus issue: Strong EU support for resuming peace talks

18 July, 2025

NEW YORK – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa voiced clear support for the resumption of Cyprus peace negotiations during an informal five-party meeting under the auspices of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

In a joint message shared on platform X, both EU leaders emphasized that the European Union remains firmly committed to the reunification of Cyprus, based on the UN Security Council resolutions and the values of the EU.

Von der Leyen underlined the Union’s readiness to actively contribute and intensify its support for the process led by the United Nations, mentioning the engagement of EU Special Envoy Johannes Hahn. Costa, for his part, expressed his full backing for Guterres’ mediation efforts and wished success to the current round of talks, calling it a “crucial moment” for dialogue.

The European Union reaffirmed its willingness to play a constructive and leading role in finding a just and sustainable solution to the decades-old Cyprus dispute, which remains a key foreign policy priority for Brussels.
