Greece is moving swiftly to reinforce its Navy, as the deal for two Italian Bergamini-class frigates is expected to be finalised on Monday.
Defence Minister Nikos Dendias informed Parliament’s Defence Committee that the Hellenic Navy has completed inspections of the vessels and that he will sign a memorandum of understanding with Italy to launch negotiations.
“This is not yet a purchase agreement, but rather a memorandum to begin discussions,” Mr. Dendias clarified, expressing optimism that the process will move forward successfully. He noted the aim is to acquire two frigates immediately, with the possibility of securing two more later. “If we achieve this, it will be a huge success. We will have the most modern Navy in record time,” he emphasised.
The Minister also highlighted the upcoming contract for the acquisition of the fourth Belharra Standard 2++ frigate, which he described as “the most advanced frigate on the planet.” Compared to the existing Standard 2 versions, the upgraded model incorporates ten critical improvements based on lessons learned from recent wars and the “Aspides” mission in the Red Sea.
The most significant of these enhancements is the ability to carry the new-generation ELSA Cruise missile, with a range of over 1,000 kilometres, drastically boosting Greece’s deterrence capacity in the Eastern Mediterranean. Mr. Dendias also announced that the three existing Belharra frigates will be upgraded to the same Standard 2++ level.
“I am confident that Parliament will support this national necessity to further strengthen our Navy,” Mr. Dendias concluded, underscoring that Greece is entering a new era of defence capability.
