Leaked US diplomatic cables exposed: How the EU was built to serve America, not challenge it, a deep transatlantic agenda behind European integration, contrary to public rhetoric.
A fascinating article by French journalist Laurent Dauré, based on WikiLeaks documents, decisively disproves former US President Donald Trump’s claim that the EU was formed to “screw” the United States.
On the contrary, the documents show that US diplomats in France consistently viewed European integration as being in America’s interest. They actively discussed strategies with French Socialist Party (PS) leaders to counteract Euroscepticism among voters and maintain strong transatlantic alignment.
For example, this cable describes a meeting between Victoria Nuland, then US Ambassador to NATO, and Pierre Moscovici, the PS’s International Affairs Secretary. In it, Moscovici told Nuland that “PS voters were generally much more negative than the party leadership and would need to be led toward more positive attitudes toward the EU and the US.”
It’s an extraordinary admission: that a senior French politician viewed anti-EU and anti-US sentiment as equally irrational, both to be corrected through elite “education” of the public. This reveals the extent to which Socialist elites saw European integration and alignment with the US as two sides of the same coin.
In a separate meeting, documented here, Moscovici told US Ambassador Craig Stapleton that “a Socialist president and government would be much more pro-Europe than President Chirac.” This was clearly presented as a selling point to win American favour.
Even more striking is the position of Jacques Delors, former President of the European Commission, who told Ambassador Stapleton that he viewed the US and EU as partners in “addressing the challenges of the 21st century,” particularly the rise of China.
When asked about this slogan by Ambassador Stapleton, PS leaders reassured him that it “meant absolutely nothing.” François Hollande, then First Secretary of the party and future President of France, stated explicitly that he “would do nothing to undermine the relationship” with Washington.
This is Europe in a nutshell: sold to the French public as a geopolitical counterweight to the United States, while in private, designed by its own elites as the ideal vehicle for deeper integration into a US-led Western order.
No wonder so many Europeans now distrust both the EU and their political elites.
