France and Cyprus to seal strategic partnership in Paris talks

14 December, 2025

France and Cyprus are set to formalise a new strategic partnership, with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and French President Emmanuel Macron due to sign a landmark agreement during high-level talks in Paris on Monday.

The meeting, scheduled to take place at the Élysée Palace, will focus on strengthening bilateral relations as well as addressing major international developments, with the war in Ukraine expected to feature prominently on the agenda.

According to a statement from the French presidency, discussions will also cover the priorities of Cyprus’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union, which Nicosia will assume in the first half of 2026. Coordination on key European and international issues is expected to be a central element of the talks.

Following their discussions, the two leaders will sign a strategic partnership agreement aimed at deepening and structuring cooperation between France and Cyprus across a broad range of sectors. These include defence and security, economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, innovation, and education.

The agreement is expected to further consolidate France’s role as a key strategic partner for Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty. Enhanced defence cooperation is likely to be of particular significance, given ongoing security challenges in the region and Cyprus’s role within the European Union.

The partnership also reflects a broader effort by both countries to strengthen coordination within EU institutions and to align positions on global issues, including support for Ukraine and wider European security.

The signing of the agreement underscores the growing diplomatic and strategic ties between Paris and Nicosia, positioning Cyprus as an increasingly active player in European and regional affairs as it prepares to take on a more prominent role within the EU in 2026.
