The Greek Ministry of Culture announced on Friday that it is closing down the country’s museums and archaeological sites — at least until March 30 — to help control the spread of coronavirus.
In a statement, the Ministry said that “due to staff shortages” it is not possible to maintain all necessary security measures to protect staff and visitors during the coronavirus outbreak.
“At the same time, relevant instructions have been given on the thorough cleaning of the facilities used by staff in all services of the Ministry of Culture, Museums and Archaeological Sites,” the statement added.
The announcement follows Thursday’s decision for a two-week closure of all the courthouses, theaters, cinemas, gyms, children playgrounds and nightclubs in the country.
These strict new emergency measures come on top of the already-announced closure of all Greek schools, as 117 cases and one death were recorded in the country.
